Invite others to join your space via the message system. If you want Mr. Wignall to be able to help you fix your site you'll need to make sure he is also set to "organizer." If you want to be the sole organizer, that's perfectly fine.

Thursday, September 18th, 2008
Today we will start by having each student log in to the wiki and "Join This Space." From now on, no student can edit their pages unless signed in.
After that, students will register their wiki site (using "LG" as the tag) and create a link to it from their web page.
1. To create a new site, start by clicking your "Message System" icon in the upper-right corner of the page. It looks like an envelope.
2. Click "Make New Space" in the upper-left corner.
3. Start with the letters "LG" in your site name.
This will tag your site as a Lionsgate Academy website. That will allow me to help you organize and work with your site if you need it.
4. Create an external link on your web PAGE to your new web SITE.
5. If you finish all of the above steps with time left, you can finish any late work or begin designing your Home Page on your web site.
IMPORTANT UPDATE
Starting tonight, all students will need to "Join This Space" in order to edit their pages.
You can do this by clicking the "Join This Space" button in the top-left corner.
As soon as you've requested membership, I'll approve (if you're a student of mine) and you can regain access to the site.
Thank you all for your understanding and participation!

I have also changed my log-in name to "mrwignall". Please use this name from now on when sending me messages. Thanks!

Today is a very special day!
Today marks the transition between designing web pages and creating whole web sites. I have a powerpoint presentation to show the class (download the presentation here) that includes a movie I made myself. I hope you enjoy it! The thing I MOST want you to learn today is the difference between web pages and web sites, and how your final web site will be used.
After students watch the presentation we will have a quick review and then students will create their web sites. I will show my sample student site and we will brainstorm ways we might be able to use them.
Today students will be working on yesterday's assignment as well as creating three additional external links to their favorite sites. Each external link needs a small paragraph explaining what the site is about and why they like it.
At the beginning of class students will learn how to use the wiki message system. Exciting stuff!
Bonus Video!
The classroom footage was shot on Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 in the 7th/8th grade Language Arts/Science class at the end of the day. The students did a GREAT job of focusing on their work and not being distracted by the camera.

Let's take a moment to remember why we're doing all this web design stuff anyways...
Most of our work this year in Language Arts and Science will be in the form of student-designed projects. The student-operated web sites will be the showcase for their projects as well as other class assignments. This allows each student to develop real-world computer skills needed for self-expression as well as create new avenues for creativity and social networking.
This week we will be making the transition from web page creation to web site design and operation. As soon as each student is familiar with operating their sites and has created their class pages, we will begin the core curriculum. I'm excited to get started!

CLASS AGENDA FOR TODAY
Talk about Web Pages of the Week.
Students will check the Wiki Sign-in Page to make sure their user-name is correct (or change it if it needs to be changed)
Students will learn how to post links to other sites or pages.
Students will begin working on their assignments.
ASSIGNMENT FOR MONDAY
Students will create five links to other student pages and write a paragraph explaining why they linked to that page. What do they like about that page?
This assignment is due by the end of class Tuesday.
WEB PAGES OF THE WEEK
Here is the first collection of Web Pages of the Week! If you are interested in having your page become a Web Page of the Week, here are the things I'm looking for (in this order):
Did you complete the assignment?
Did you put a lot of effort into your writing?
Was your work visually attractive? (nice colors, fonts, size, etc)
Did you insert images that were related to the assignment? (train pictures/videos if you're talking about trains, etc)
Did you add extra things that weren't required, but somehow added to the quality of your work?
The "Cool Factor": Is there anything else that somehow makes your page stand out among the rest?
Without further ado, here they are...your Web Pages of the Week!
Anna H's Crazy Page of Horses : I picked Anna's page because she obviously spent a good deal of time making sure her writing was the best it could be. I like her writing style and it's fun and easy to read! Nicholas O's Website : Nick's page is very simple, but attractive. He used a nice-looking font and was careful about his spelling and punctuation. I like the fact that he centered his image on the bottom. It's little details like that that really make a web page great. Wyatt W.'s Page of Model Trains : I really like Wyatt's page because he, like the others, put a lot of effort into the writing part of the assignment. Also, Wyatt did two other things that stand out: 1) he gave a little information on all his video clips instead of just randomly inserting them. 2) He added a chat room to his page but gave some very good, clear rules for its use. Nice job, Wyatt! leah m butterfly skies : Leah's page is another very simple page that shows a lot of effort. You can tell she put a lot of thought and creativity into her paragraphs. I like that Leah frequently asked for help when she needed it and tried very hard to do a good job. stephen's cool web page : Stephen's page has a couple of cool videos, but just look at how much detail he put into his paragraphs! I love the way his sentences flow together. The section about going to Hollywood was some of the best writing in the entire school. He explained where he went (Universal Studios), how it made him feel (overwhelmed), and why that trip is so important to him (because he wants to be a director someday). Awesome writing, Stephen!
Other Pages of Interest:
Israel D's WoW page : Izzy has a lot of videos, but more interestingly he has decided to use his page as a sort of blog. He's giving permission to others to edit his page in order to create a discussion. Very interesting! Evan's page of fun : I absolutely had to mention Evan's page. Evan got started on his own wikispace before the school year even began, and has already put up links to two of his other websites. Evan also understands the importance of advertising, and frequently attempts to direct traffic to his pages! Evan also is the only student to have uploaded an audio file. He and Izzy are both ahead of the curve!
